William Henry "Johnny" Alban's Obituary
William Henry "Johnny" Alban Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, in Houston, Texas, the city where he was born on December 7, 1932. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a creative force in Houston’s advertising and philanthropic communities, Johnny leaves behind a legacy of artistry, faith, and unwavering dedication to family and service.
Johnny’s early creative talents were evident in his celebrated holiday window displays at Foley Bros and the beloved nativity scenes he designed for Holy Ghost Catholic Church. These early expressions of his artistic vision laid the foundation for a remarkable career in advertising. After gaining experience in the industry, Johnny founded Alban Group, Inc. in the late 1960s. Under his leadership, the firm flourished with high-profile accounts such as Minute Maid, Uncle Ben's, Tyson Foods, Maryland Club Coffee, Hi-C, Catholic Charities, and Sam Montgomery Oldsmobile.
His work earned him numerous accolades from the American Advertising Federation and the Houston Advertising Federation. Beyond awards and recognition, one of Johnny’s greatest joys was having his children join him in the business—a source of immense pride that reflected his deep commitment to both family and professional excellence.
Johnny’s influence extended far beyond his career. He served as President or Board Member for many organizations and gave generously of his time and talents to causes close to his heart. His volunteer efforts supported institutions such as the Heritage Society, Arthritis Foundation, Catholic Charities, Trees for Houston, and The Houston International Festival. Whether fundraising or planning events, Johnny brought passion and creativity to every endeavor.
A man of deep faith throughout his life, Johnny shared numerous spiritual journeys with his beloved wife of 71 years, Barbara Anne Heiser Alban. Together they were active members of several parishes over the years: married at St. Anne’s Catholic Church; longtime members of Holy Ghost; charter members of St. John Vianney; and most recently integral participants at All Saints Parish. There they contributed meaningfully to parish life through service on the parish council and involvement in TOOL (Together Our Own Lives), a marriage support group, developing many strong friendships.
Family was always at the center of Johnny’s world. He is survived by his wife Barbara; sister Judy Alban; children William H. Alban III and his wife Cathy Walsh Alban; Robert H. Alban and partner Jack Barnett; John Gregory Alban Sr. and wife Lori Marinko Alban; Karen L. Blankenship; Richard D. Alban and wife Stephanie Fyler Alban; grandchildren RJ, Patrick, John, Chris, Meagan, Chase, Chelsea, Jude, Elliott, Luca, Avery and Kylie; and great-grandchildren Tommy, Spencer, Conner, Lexi, Aubrey, Ben, Max, Stevie and Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Sr. and Irene Alban; siblings Joanne and Tim Alban; daughter Alissa; and son-in-law Todd Blankenship.
Johnny found joy in singing—often filling rooms with music—and loved painting as another outlet for his boundless creativity. He cherished doing projects with his children and grandchildren—moments that reflected both his artistic spirit and total devotion to family life.
Loyal to a fault with an extraordinary sense of duty toward others’ well-being—whether through mentorship or community service—Johnny lived a life defined by generosity of spirit.
May William Henry "Johnny" Alban Jr.’s memory be a blessing to all who knew him—and may it continue to inspire creativity, compassion and commitment across generations.
