Julia Mercedes Castilla's Obituary
Julia Mercedes Castilla, author of several popular children’s books, died on Monday, November 18. She was 87. Her best-selling Aventuras de un niño de la calle narrates the story of two street-children as they struggle to survive in the streets of Bogotá, Julia Mercedes’s native city. In this, and in many of her other books, she displayed a particular gift for conveying the sense of vulnerability and isolation experienced by children. In Aventuras, it is the sense of a homeless child in a hostile city; in Emilio, an immigrant boy in a new school; and in Luela escala montañas, a girl living in the countryside whose family does not believe she can do what she sets her mind to. The stories often resolve with the special joy of the once vulnerable child finding the resources to survive and find friendship and love.
Julia Mercedes was born in 1937 in Bogotá, Colombia, to Celmira Santofimio Trujillo and Carlos Castilla Saiz, a coffee farm owner and dedicated telecom professional. Some of her earliest childhood memories are of her neighborhood streets in Chapinero, which, along with other neighborhoods she’d move to as an early teen, left a deep impression on her and went on to inform the settings of several of her books, including Aventuras. The oldest of four siblings, Julia Mercedes was accelerated through her schooling, pushed forward into classes with older students where she often felt isolated and out of place. It was at the house of her aunt and uncle, Magdalena Santofimio Trujillo and Alfonso Palacio Rudas–a lawyer and prominent politician with a penchant for book collecting–where, during countless afternoons after school, she read the books that first inspired her to write. Aged eight or nine, she wrote her first short story and won a writing contest, although it would be a long time before she dedicated herself to writing full time.
By her own account an awkward child, Julia Mercedes found more confidence as an adolescent and the social world that opened up before her, perhaps especially in the time she spent in Ibagué–the capital of Tolima and where her parents’ families were from. But it was back in Bogotá where, in her early teens, she would meet her future husband, Alberto Gomez Rivas. A long courtship followed before they would marry in 1958. The following year, Alberto won a scholarship to study in the United States. They left on a study trip that eventuated in migration, first to the midwest town of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where Alberto enrolled in studies in civil engineering and where the couple had their first daughter, Juanita.
As a naive young woman suddenly transplanted to a mid-western town with no international experience, knowledge of English, or of the basic skills of keeping house and cooking, the experience was jarring, challenging, and profoundly formative. She revisited these early years with Alberto in Bogotá and the United States in the last two short novels she wrote.
The couple would later move to San Francisco, California, where Alberto worked for an engineering firm building the BART, and where they had their second child, Andres. Later they moved to Austin, where Julia Mercedes studied literature and was encouraged to write by her professors, while Alberto completed a doctorate. The family moved again, this time to Houston, where they had their third child, Camilo. Alberto worked with a computer manufacturer and Julia Mercedes began writing in earnest and attending a writer’s group to whom she would turn for support and creative companionship, in a relationship that lasted over fifty years, and even though the peregrinations continued.
They moved to Minneapolis for a three-year stint before making a bigger move, first on an extended trip to Europe (taking advantage of a temporary position Alberto secured in London) and then returning to Bogotá, where they reconnected with family and friends and attempted to re-establish roots. Alberto started a consulting firm and Julia Mercedes worked for a publisher and endeavored to write every day. She wrote a column, Leer para creer, in the daily El Tiempo. The eighties were a turbulent decade for the country and its capital. Both Julia Mercedes and Alberto’s parents died in the years they were there, and they eventually reasoned that they might be happier pursuing their careers differently, as Alberto’s firm did well but was a constant challenge to maintain. While ultimately unsuccessful, the work and connections in the ten years spent in Bogotá would be foundational; she published both of her first books, Murmullos de pueblo (a collection of short stories) and Aventuras de un niño de la calle (originally entitled Pirinolo) in 1990, the year they returned to the United States. They moved to Atlanta while Alberto looked for a job in academia, which he eventually found back in Houston, to where they returned in the summer of 1991. Alberto taught engineering at the University of Houston, Downtown, and Julia Mercedes wrote full time, publishing more than ten books, including Emilio, Nadie se llama Perucho Corchuelo, Padres ajenos, Luisa viaja en tren, El Tesoro de la pordiosera, Aire viviente, Sueños intactos, and La otra America. Several of them have appeared in English, translated by the author.
Julia Mercedes was predeceased by her husband Alberto in 2022. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2019. The disease progressed slowly; her mind and memory were lucid but her movement became progressively impaired.
She is survived by her three children Juanita, Andres, and Camilo, their spouses, Michael, Melyssa, and Emmanuelle, and six grandchildren, Natalia, Andrew, Eric, Emma, Carlos, and Zélie.
