Barbara Jean Brezina Sykes' Obituary
Barbara Jean (Brezina) Sykes, 74, of Conroe, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Barbara was born on March 24, 1951, in Houston, Texas, the beloved child of John F. and Helen M. (Kuciemba) Brezina, and the oldest of four daughters. She attended Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in Galena Park and graduated from Galena Park High School. From an early age, Barbara was known for her warmth, kindness, and the way she made everyone feel at home.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Timothy Sean Sykes; her parents, John and Helen Brezina; her in-laws, Dr. Walter P. and Betty Sykes; brother-in-law Michael Sykes, her sister-in-law, Sue Sykes; niece, Kathryn Sykes; nephew, Christian Sykes; and great-niece, Isabella Kubiak.
She is survived by her loving children: Kevin Sykes (partner Marissa Cook), Starbuck Sykes (wife Mary Beth), and Aloysius Sykes. She was the proud and adoring Busia to her grandchildren Orion Sykes, Mylo Sykes, and Ezra Savage. She is also survived by her sisters, Georgia Dooley (Jimmy), Birdie Kubiak (Dennis), and Rhonda Lynch (Rance); sister-in-law Anne Hillin (Nestor); brothers-in-law Pat Sykes (Laurie) and Miles Sykes (Madlyn); many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Barbara’s love extended well beyond her immediate family. Her love as Busia extended to Andrew, Avery Savage, and Sophia Bauer, who carry with them the warmth and love she so freely gave.
Above all, Barbara loved her family. Her home was always open, her table always had room for one more, and she welcomed everyone as if they were her own. She had a gift for making people feel loved, accepted, and cared for. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and baking, but what truly defined her was the way she built connections, celebrated others, and found joy in the simple moments of life.
Visitation will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 109 N. Frazier St., Conroe, TX, followed by the Rosary at 9:45 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. The Committal and Burial will take place the next day, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Evergreen Cemetery, 1050 N Main St, Jasper, TX 75951.
